For one hundred years GMC still continues to build motor vehicles that are above most in performance, value,
quality, carrying capability, comfort, styling, reliability and economic to run. Old GMC trucks are in high demand
as collectables. You will see many of them in antique truck shows.
In retrospect, it was GMC that built a larger line of trucks than Chevrolet, as they leaned more towards the
light and medium duty models. GMC ended up building some fine pickup trucks, but they were a lot more expensive and
were better equipped.
Under General Motors, the old GMC trucks were the first to have the synchromesh transmission in their heavy duty
trucks. Along with the four wheel brakes, dual range transmission, recirculation ball bearings steering, full
pressure lubrication, hydraulic valve lifters; air suspension and the two speed rear axles.
One of the old GMC trucks was the nineteen thirty seven pickup. It had style and elegance and would function
when it had to. The art deco manner could truly be called streamline. It has a barrel shaped grille that has
horizontal bars with a vertical bar central section. The grille then continues along the hood sides. It also
had a one piece windshield along with the ever so handsome front bumper that dipped down.
This old GMC truck chassis weighted two thousand one hundred and ninety five pounds, and cost four hundred and
ten dollars, the body was extra. It used a two hundred and thirty cid six cylinder, with three point forty four
inch bore and four point thirteen inch stroke. To build this old GMC truck cost about forty three thousand dollars,
which back then was a fortune.
In nineteen sixteen another one of the old GMC trucks crossed the United States, from Seattle Washington to New
York City in thirty days. In nineteen twenty six a two ton old GMC truck crossed the country in five days and
thirty minutes, starting in New York City and ended up in San Francisco California. At the beginning of World War
II, the military bought six hundred thousand old GMC trucks.
There are a number of old GMC trucks, one is a nineteen fifty five, for its ‘second series’ lineup. This was the
first major redesign since nineteen forty seven. This new truck had a two bar grille, bumper with circular guards,
hooded headlights and GMC lettering on the lower hood surface. Most GMC old trucks are rare, if you find one and
want to restore it, grab it quick.
Most of the old GMC trucks also have now paint chips from the old models, and most years are covered as well.
They can match the original paint so you can actually have true old GMC trucks. In the old GMC trucks you can find
most of the original parts. Shop around, as they are out there. Try going online, as it will help you with old
truck parts that are still made with the highest quality GMC is known for.
